Football's top transfers from the 2019 summer transfer window so far However, the Daily Mail claim a sporting director will NOT be appointed this summer with United chiefs believing their existing system is working well enough. This means Woodward, United’s executive vice-chairman, is pressing ahead with transfer negotiations himself as he remains in sole charge.A summer deal has already been wrapped up for Daniel James, the Wales winger, with United paying Swansea 18million for the youngster’s services. While this appears a wise and low risk move, Woodward has had more failures than successes during his time in charge of the Red Devils’ transfer business. He has been criticised for signing under-performing players on high wages, such as Alexis Sanchez, and messing up the club’s wage structure which has led to David de Gea searching for an Old Trafford exit.
