Paul Pogba: France midfielder reinstated as one of Manchester United’s captains after being stripped of armband by Jose Mourinho
Paul Pogba has been reinstated to Manchester United’s leadership group and will be considered for the captaincy after being stripped of the armband by Jose Mourinho earlier this season.Exactly four months to the day after Pogba was dropped as one of United’s vice-captains, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirmed the France midfielder could skipper the Red Devils should Antonio Valencia, the club captain, and second-choice Ashley Young be unavailable.Pogba captained United on occasion before being stripped of the armband1

United’s caretaker manager also backed Pogba, 25, to become a full-time captain in the future.“Hes definitely captaincy material,” Solskjaer said of Pogba. “Hes a leader. Youve seen the videos from Frances World Cup win.”The video in question emerged following the end of the World Cup, with Pogba shown giving a rousing dressing room speech to his team-mates ahead of last summer’s 4-2 defeat of Croatia that crowned Les Bleus world champions.Pogba lost the vice-captaincy under Mourinho’s stewardship in September, with the Portuguese confirming his decision in the wake of United’s shock Carabao Cup defeat by Derby. He insisted there was no issue between the pair, however.Mourinho said: “The only truth is that I made the decision of Paul not to be the second captain any more but no fall-out, no problems at all. “The same person that decides that Paul is not the second captain anymore is the same person who decides that Paul was the second captain. Myself. I am the manager, I can make these decisions. No fall-out at all, no problems at all, just one decision that I dont have to explain.”Pogba struggled for form under Mourinho but has burst into life since Solskjaer succeeded him as the club’s caretaker manager, as have many of his United team-mates.The former Juventus midfielder has scored three goals and created a further four in the six matches since Mourinho’s sacking, and has been praised for finally fulfilling his potential at Old Trafford.
