Sam Allardyce says Everton sacking was ‘ludicrous’ and believes Marco Silva set to suffer same fate
Sam Allardyce has defended his tenure as Everton manager, telling talkSPORT the decision to sack him was ‘ludicrous’.The former England boss took over at Goodison Park in November 2017 following a woeful start to the Premier League season under Ronald Koeman, and went on to guide them to an eighth-place finish.Sam Allardyce won 10 matches, lost six and drew eight at Everton2
Sam Allardyce won 10 matches, lost six and drew eight at Everton
But, despite the upturn in results, Allardyce was sacked at the end of the campaign with the style of football under him heavily criticised by Toffees fans.Everton have not exactly flourished under Big Sam’s successor, however, with Marco Silva finding himself under pressure just eight months into his reign. And Allardyce has suggested Everton could have made greater progress under him had the club’s hierarchy ‘held their nerve’ and given him their backing.Speaking on the Sports Breakfast, he said: “Everybody walks around talking about Sam Allardyce’s style is not good enough, he doesn’t play the right way and so on and so forth and it is a massive problem for me. People believe it. You believe the false lies, the false implications. Football does that – it believes that lie sometimes.“It is built up by fellow managers, journos who follow on with it and you are never going to get rid of it. The type of football I played at Everton, the fans said it wasn’t good enough and I would say the same – I knew it wasn’t good enough for Everton – but I knew I had to get them in the position where they were safe.“Then let me build the team, let me spend the next 80m, 100 million on the players that will make Everton much much more fluid, much more creative and go forward and score more goals and hopefully finish better than eighth.Sam Allardyce’s successor, Marco Silva, is now finishing himself under pressure at Everton2

“They talk about my style of football, well Ronald [Koeman] went and they said he played the right style of football. Roberto [Martinez] went, everybody said he played the right style of football, and I went because I didn’t play the right style of football.“It is about trying to entertain and win, that is the ultimate, but you have to keep winning first to change the things that need to change.“If I got sacked because my results weren’t good enough at Everton, I accept it but getting sacked when they finish eighth, it is ridiculous. In fact it is ludicrous.”Everton have won just three of their past 12 league games, and Allardyce believes another managerial change could be imminent. He added: “If the fans continue to pressure the board, the board will ultimately crack and you may see a change of manager again, particularly if they continue to lose football matches.”

Tottenham Hotspur 1-1 Arsenal: Hugo Lloris saves Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang penalty at the death in eventful north London derby at Wembley
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had a stoppage time penalty saved by Hugo Lloris as Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal battled out an eventful draw at Wembley.Harry Kane became the all-time top scorer in north London derbies after equalising from the spot – and his effort was enough to earn Tottenham’s first draw in 33 matches.Aubameyang had his penalty saved by Lloris in injury time3
Aubameyang had his penalty saved by Lloris in injury time
It was the Englishman’s ninth goal in nine Premier League games against the Gunners, but Lloris’ stop was even more important as it ensured Spurs avoided three successive defeats, which would have left Tottenham’s chances of sealing a place in the top four in serious jeopardy. Both penalty decisions were soft, with Kane appearing offside, while Unai Emery’s side finished with 10 men after Lucas Torreira was sent off in stoppage time for a foul on Danny Rose.Mauricio Pochettino, celebrating his 47th birthday, was happy with the gifts Kane and Lloris provided as his side’s lead over Arsenal looked like being cut to one point, having been 10 before last weekend. It remains at four points, but the race for the Champions League places, which also involves Manchester United and Chelsea, hots up.For a long time it looked like Ramsey was going to say farewell from the north London derby, ahead of his summer move to Juventus, in style as he put the Gunners ahead in the 16th minute.Leaving top scorer Aubameyang and Mesut Ozil on the bench did not seem to have too much of an adverse effect as they sliced Spurs open.Ramsey’s cool finish gave Arsenal the lead3
Ramsey’s cool finish gave Arsenal the lead
Davinson Sanchez fatally misjudged his header in the centre circle, which allowed Alexandre Lacazette to set Ramsey clear and the departing Welshman coolly rounded Lloris and slotted home.Spurs had to muster some sort of response and they momentarily thought they had levelled eight minutes later but Kane was ruled offside when he headed home Kieran Trippier’s free-kick.Arsenal came close to doubling their lead when they again caught Spurs on the break and Lloris was forced into a smart stop from Alex Iwobi’s curling effort. But it was a double save at the other end that ensured the visitors took their lead into the half-time interval as Leno produced two top-drawer stops.First he kept out Christian Eriksen’s first-time effort from eight yards with his feet and, with everyone waiting for the net to ripple as the rebound fell to Moussa Sissoko, the keeper then pulled off an instinctive reflex save with his left hand.Spurs huffed and puffed in their attempts to get back into the game and it could have been all over midway through the second half had Lacazette not sliced his effort from close range wide. That miss led to 16 dramatic final minutes.Kane’s controversial penalty cancelled out Ramsey’s opener3
Kane’s controversial penalty cancelled out Ramsey’s opener
The hosts were handed a way back into the game when referee Anthony Taylor adjudged Shkodran Mustafi to have fouled Kane, though it looked soft and Kane was shown to be offside, but there was little doubt the England captain was going to convert from the spot.Spurs would have fancied going on to win it, but in the end they were happy to get the draw thanks to their skipper. After Sanchez stupidly fouled Aubameyang, Lloris got down to keep out a poor spot-kick from the Arsenal striker, with an even better tackle from Jan Vertonghen in the follow-up allowing a visiting player an easy tap-in.Spaniard Torreira then saw red at the death as he caught Rose high up, with an enthralling derby ending as a stalemate
