Liverpool badly missed Joe Gomez against Manchester City, says former Reds midfielder Danny Murphy
Danny Murphy believes Liverpool badly missed centre-back Joe Gomez in their Premier League title showdown with Manchester City.Jurgen Klopps side suffered their first league defeat of season on Thursday night as they lost 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium, as City reduced the Reds lead at the top of the table to just four points. It was a tight and quite chaotic affair between undoubtedly the two best teams in the country at the moment, but there was one man who stood out for the wrong reasons.Lovren is a constant source of frustration for Liverpool fans1
Lovren is a constant source of frustration for Liverpool fans
The much-maligned Dejan Lovren has looked an improved player alongside Virgil van Dijk this season, but he had a number of harebrained moments against City and one of them was punished by provider Leroy Sane and goalscorer Sergio Aguero. And Murphy believes it would have been a different result had Gomez been fit and playing.

The 21-year-old defender is expected back in action later this month after a six week layoff with a fractured leg.Speaking on Fridays Sports Breakfast, Murphy said: If Gomez was playing, with his pace and recovery, is Sane getting in behind? Would Gomez be beaten like Lovren did on that near post?Lovren has done well to come back from where he was at a year ago and hes a good second choice. But if Gomez was playing would he have suffered the same embarrassment of athleticism?Sane is quick, but Lovren was at fault, really. With his professional impartiality aside, the result was admittedly a painful one for Murphy. And the boyhood Liverpool fan believes the title race would have been done and dusted had Klopps side won.Now though, the momentum may have shifted and Man City have a great chance to rival the Reds for the trophy. There are lots of aspects of the game but ultimately what we saw was two wonderfully gifted teams going head to head, he added.Im a Red and Im desperate for Liverpool to win it, and I think if Liverpool had won it and gone ten points clear it would have been done.Listen back to Danny Murphy on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast IN FULL above!
