Mauricio Pochettino lauds Tottenham’s ‘amazing’ new stadium and says players have ‘something wrong in their heads’ if not motivated to play there
Mauricio Pochettino believes Tottenham’s players are sure to be inspired by the atmosphere inside their new stadium, having finally played their first match at the stunning ground.Spurs returned home after a six-month delay to open the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Wednesday evening, with Crystal Palace the first visitors – and losers – at the 1billion structure. After an opening ceremony that involved choirs, tenors and fireworks the game itself took a while to spark into life – Heung-min Son writing his name in the history books with the first goal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium before Christian Eriksen wrapped up a 2-0 win.Heung-min Son opened the scoring at Spurs’ new ground – aided by a massive deflection1

While securing victory on their big night was important, the three points also sees Tottenham move into third having picked up their first Premier League win since February 10.Where other clubs have struggled to adjust to new homes in the past, Pochettino believes his side will not suffer the same fate as they battle for a top-four finish. The Argentine is so sure his players will be motivated by the atmosphere in the new stadium, he suggests those NOT inspired must have ‘something wrong with their heads’.“I feel so proud,” he said. “I am so happy and it is difficult to describe, the emotions and it was very emotional before the start of the game. It was very emotional, all the build-up of the game.“For sure for the opponent it is going to be difficult. If like me I am the manager of Tottenham or I am playing for Tottenham, you adapt so quickly in this atmosphere and I think it was amazing.“It is impossible not to be affected by your fans, the energy and emotion to be there and run, shoot, save and tackle.“If you are not motivated to play in this type of atmosphere something wrong happened in your head. For sure it is going to be tough for the opponent.

“That is our second day at the stadium for us and the players but it starts to feel like home, it is going to be such an important place for the future and of course I think we were right to move here.“With all the risk, of course, but I think in football if you want to achieve important things you need to be brave and we were brave moving and starting to play this season.”Roy Hodgson’s side left north London with nothing to show for their battling performance, though they will forever go down in history as the first team to have played at the stadium.“It is outstanding,” Hodgson admitted of the ground.“I can understand why there has been so much hype around it – they must be extremely proud to have created a stadium like this for their team to perform in.”

Miguel Almiron: View from MLS on Newcastle United’s new record signing – his energy and attitude set him apart

Miguel Almiron: View from MLS on Newcastle United’s new record signing – his energy and attitude set him apart
It has taken 14 years but Newcastle United finally broke their transfer record in January, signing Miguel Almiron from Atlanta United in a deal worth around 20million.The Toon Army are delighted that Mike Ashley has opened his chequebook and brought in one of Rafa Benitezs top targets but many who are unfamiliar with the Paraguayan’s talents will be wondering whether he will prove to be worth the sizeable investment.Atlanta fans were likely wondering just the same when Almiron arrived in Major League Soccer in December 2016 for a reported league transfer record fee of $8 million. But from the moment Miggy – as he is affably known to Atlanta fans – stepped onto the pitch, it was apparent that the playmaker was going to more than satisfy the amount that was paid to secure his services. What stands out right away is his pace. A swift carrier of the ball, with a lovely left foot, hes the type of player that actually becomes quicker when dribbling, and is very positive in the path he takes.Miguel Almiron was a major hit in MLS after joining Atlanta United in 20162
Miguel Almiron was a major hit in MLS after joining Atlanta United in 2016
Not known for being one to settle into possession and stroke the ball about, once Almiron is on the ball he is looking to get forward with great urgency. Hes frightening to the opposition on the counter attack. His energy and attitude also set him apart. He will put in the work regardless of the occasion. In MLS, there were unpleasant games such as in the baltic cold and snow-filled pitch away to Minnesota United and Almiron would be chasing players, closing them down all over the pitch, just as would in the more glamorous games at Mercedes Benz Stadium in front of a sold-out 70,000 crowd. There was never too big or small an occasion that Almiron didnt put his best left foot forward. He is desperate to do well in every moment and will put the grind in wherever he plays in England.Miguel Almiron in action for Atlanta United in Minnesota2
Miguel Almiron in action for Atlanta United in Minnesota
Finally, he can be ruthless in the final third. In 62 regular season matches for Atlanta United, he scored 21 goals and created 28 more. The numbers may not knock the socks off, but its about how he opens up space for others around him. There isnt a better example than Atlanta Uniteds striker Josef Martinez, the Golden Boot and MVP winner of MLS last season. Martinezs fine record was largely down to the service provided by his chief support act, Almiron. Are there are any question marks? Well, it will be a challenge for him to adapt to the physical side of the British game. While sadly a hearty tackle in all of football seems to be of times past, the difference to what referees allow in MLS compared to the Premier League is that of a pillow fight when compared to a street fight. It will be interesting to see how Almiron handles a heavy challenge, and having less time to work his magic on the ball.He does cut a very slim frame, but maybe his pace will translate enough to skip away from bodies. He will also have to handle the pressure of the Premier League and, potentially, a relegation battle. It is one thing playing on a side that is arguably one of the most exciting MLS teams in the history of the league, in a culture that is always eager to offer as much praise as possible. Its another thing being in the pressure cooker that is the Premier League, where players are fighting for their place and reputation every day. Almiron has yet to be seen as a player that would shrink back, but at the same time, he is yet to be placed under such heavy expectations. The bottom line is this transfer could prove to be a very astute one for both Rafa Benitez and Darren Eales, the Atlanta United president. For Benitez, hes put his trust in his contacts such as Tata Martino, the recently-departed Atlanta United manager, and has demonstrated his faith in Almiron by convincing the club to shell out a record fee for the first time since Michael Owen was tempted to swap the Bernabeu for St James Park in 2005.And for Eales, his faith in Almirons worth has been rewarded, after reportedly turning down lesser offers during this past season.Time will tell whether he proves a good signing for Newcastle. Im certainly backing Miggy to make his mark in England.

Every Premier League club’s top transfer target in January, including Gonzalo Higuain, Callum Wilson and Kalidou Koulibaly
Not all clubs are able to buy players in January, but that doesn’t mean they’re not considering their options. And with just-under two weeks until the transfer window closes, talkSPORT.com has taken a look at the top target for every Premier League club.

AFC Bournemouth – Chris Mepham (Brentford)

Bournemouth have been pretty active in January so far – securing a 19million move for Dominic Solanke and a loan deal for Nathaniel Clyne – both from Liverpool.Mepham in action for Wales against the Republic of Ireland in September14
Mepham in action for Wales against the Republic of Ireland in September
And it’s understood the Cherries are close to bringing in Brentford’s Chris Mepham for over 15m to bolster a defence that has been shipping goals recently – conceding 17 goals in their last five games. However, Bournemouth’s main priority this season has to be keeping hold of star striker Callum Wilson, who has been linked with Chelsea and West Ham in January.

Arsenal – Denis Suarez (Barcelona)

Unai Emery declared last week that Arsenal can only sign players on loan in January which is a massive blow for a club in the middle of its transition phase. However, one name that has been linked with a move to the Emirates is unsettled Barca midfielder Denis Suarez.Suarez has struggled for first-team football at the Nou Camp14
Suarez has struggled for first-team football at the Nou Camp
It is understood the Gunners will pay 2m for his services until the end of the season with a view to buying him on a permanent deal in the summer.

Brighton & Hove Albion – Alexis Mac Allister (Argentinos Juniors)

Brighton are in a good place. Eight points clear of the relegation zone and simply too good to go down so there’s no great need for them to recruit this winter. However, the Seagulls have been linked with a move for Argentinian prospect Alexis Mac Allister.Mac Allister could be on his way to the Amex in January14
Mac Allister could be on his way to the Amex in January
The 20-year-old midfielder, who also has roots in Scotland, has great potential but signing a player from Argentina can be tricky due to work permit issues.

Burnley – Demetri Mitchell (Manchester United)

Despite their crucial victory over Fulham last weekend, Burnley are still a club at risk of suffering relegation after an excellent campaign last season.Sean Dyche’s men really could do with another defender to tighten things up at the back but they have not been linked with many players this window. However, according to the Daily Mirror, Manchester United winger Demetri Mitchell has reportedly attracted interest from the Clarets and Bournemouth after his productive loan spell at Hearts in the Scottish Premier League.

Cardiff – Emiliano Sala (Nantes)

Sala is Ligue 1’s third top scorer this season14
Sala is Ligue 1’s third top scorer this season
Goals goals goals are on Cardiff’s agenda for the second half of the season if they want to stay up in the Premier League having played defender Callum Paterson up front for a lot of the campaign. And to their credit, they have taken action, securing the loan signing of Oumar Niasse from Everton and they’re alsoon the verge of completing a deal for Nantes striker Emiliano Sala.Sala, who has 12 goals in 19 Ligue 1 appearances this season, has flown out to Cardiff for a medical but is not expected to feature in their crucial Premier League clash with Newcastle on Saturday as Nantes want him to play one final game for them on Sunday.

Chelsea – Gonzalo Higuain (Juventus)

Chelsea are in need of a natural goalscorer and it looks like they’re finally going to get one in the form of Gonzalo Higuain. The Juventus man, who has spent the first half of the season on loan at AC Milan, is expected to move on loan in January with the option to extend it for a further 12 months in the summer.

Crystal Palace – Cenk Tosun (Everton)

Crystal Palace missed out on striker Cenk Tosun a year ago after he chose to join Everton from Besiktas, however, things have not gone to plan for the Turkey international.Marco Silva does not appear to rate Tosun that highly as he has been restricted to appearances from the bench more often than not.And the Liverpool Echo claims Palace are willing to go for Tosun again as they desperately search for an out-and-out striker to add some much-needed goals to their game.Tosun wants to fight for his place at Goodison Park but the decision surrounding his future may not be his14
Tosun wants to fight for his place at Goodison Park but the decision surrounding his future may not be his

Everton – Ryan Fraser (Bournemouth)

Exciting changes are going on at Everton but most of their transfer dealings in January are likely to see players leave Goodison Park rather than come in.However, they could be ready to pounce on Ryan Fraser, who is yet to sign a new deal at the Cherries, with The Sun reporting Everton are monitoring the situation.

Fulham – Gary Cahill (Chelsea)

In truth, it would probably do Fulham good not to bring any more players in as they’re a squad full of new faces with little idea how to play together. But if they were to bring in someone else, then a defensive leader is what they need as the Cottagers have been far too easy to breach at the back this season.Cahill wants to find a new club and Fulham appears to be the most likely destination14
Cahill wants to find a new club and Fulham appears to be the most likely destination
And Chelsea centre-back Gary Cahill could be on his way to the Blues’ west London rivals after his links with Arsenal have gone quiet.

Huddersfield – A new manager

Huddersfield need a miracle to stay up and could do with multiple new signings. But they need to get someone in to manage the players first following David Wagner’s departure on Monday.Under-19s coach Mark Hudson has been put in charge for the Terriers’ Premier League clash at home to Manchester City on Sunday – a game you can listen to live on talkSPORT– and if they can get a result then that could give him the job full-time.Wagner left Huddersfield bottom of the Premier League14
Wagner left Huddersfield bottom of the Premier League
But given Huddersfield are bottom of the division and eight points off safety, the manager’s job is something of a poisoned chalice.

Leicester City – Brendan Rodgers (Celtic)

Leicester have hit something of a rut lately through their Carabao Cup and FA Cup exits in quick succession. They’re clearly suffering from losing their best player in Riyad Mahrez over the summer and manager Claude Puel’s future is looking very uncertain.Few players have been linked with moves to Leicester in January as there seems to be little appeal to go there at the moment so perhaps a new manager is what the club needs.Puel’s days at Leicester appear to be numbered14
Puel’s days at Leicester appear to be numbered
Brendan Rodgers has been linked with a move to the King Power Stadium, but the Celtic boss has stayed true to conventions and distanced himself from the role in public.

Liverpool – Weston McKennie (Schalke)

Jurgen Klopp seemed to be quite irritated by talkSPORT’s Ian Abrahams suggestion that Liverpool need to bring in another defender in January due to their injury crisis at the back. However, they have been linked with a move for Schalke midfielder Weston McKennie in January and will try again in the summer if they can’t get a deal over the line for the American, according to The Sun.McKennie in action for Schalke against rivals and Klopp’s former club Dortmund14

Manchester City – A replacement for Fernandinho

These are big boots to fill as Fernandinho is arguably Manchester City’s most important player. But the Brazilian turns 34 in May so Pep Guardiola will be determined to get someone in sooner rather than later after failing to land Jorginho in the summer, who chose to join Chelsea instead.City have been linked with the likes of Declan Rice, Ruben Neves and Croatian wonderkid Ante Palaversa.

Manchester United – Kalidou Koulibaly (Napoli)

Jose Mourinho was unable to land a centre-back in the summer but now life at Old Trafford is looking more rosy under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, there could be an opportunity to bring in a top class defender.Koulibaly has been linked with a number of Europe’s top clubsGetty14
Koulibaly has been linked with a number of Europe’s top clubs
They have been heavily linked with Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly despite manager Carlo Ancelotti claiming the Senegal international does not want to leave.

Newcastle United – Gregoire Defrel (Roma)

Let’s face it, even though Newcastle could do with some more players to boost their chances of survival, they’re unlikely to sign anyone in January. But stranger things have happened in football and Corriere dello Sportclaims the Magpies have offered 13m for Roma outcast Gregoire Defrel. The striker is currently on loan at Sampdoria and with seven goals so far this term, Defrel could give Newcastle a little extra panache up front.

Southampton – Jean-Kevin Augustin (RB Leipzig)

Will Hasenhuttl be able to pull any transfer tricks out of the hat?14
Will Hasenhuttl be able to pull any transfer tricks out of the hat?
Saints have improved noticeably since Ralph Hasenhuttl was appointed manager in December and he may be making an impact in the transfer market too.Exciting youngster Jean-Kevin Augustin, who worked under the Austrian at RB Leipzig, could be on his way to the south coast. However, Hasenhuttl has remained coy on the Augustin speculation, saying: “It’s nice that we are linked with this guy.I know Jean-Kevin very well and every player I know well is linked with us.”

Tottenham – Giuseppe Rossi (Free agent)

Harry Kane’s injury and Heung-min Son at the Asian Cup has prompted a frantic search for a new striker in January and their answer could be former Manchester United man Giuseppe Rossi.Rossi has been training with United this month14
Rossi has been training with United this month
Spurs have reportedly made an approach for the Italian on a pay-as-you-play deal for the free agent. He was last at Serie A club Genoa before leaving at the end of last season.

Watford – Maxwel Cornet (Lyon)

Watford’s main concern this transfer window has to focus on keeping players rather than buying players with Abdoulaye Doucoure telling French media he plans to leave the Hornets. However, an intriguing rumour saw Lyon winger Maxwel Cornet linked to Watford early in January.Cornet has been linked with a surprise move to Watford14
